Ertapenem - Ertapenem is an antibiotic that fights bacteria.

Ertapenem is used to treat severe infections of the skin, lungs, stomach, pelvis, and urinary tract. It is also used to prevent infection in people having certain types of surgery.

Ertapenem may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Pharmacology: Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis.

Indication: Treatment of moderate to severe complicated intra-abdominal infections, complicated skin and skin structure infections (including diabetic foot infections without osteomyelitis), community-acquired pneumonia, complicated UTIs (eg, pyelonephritis), and acute pelvic infections (eg, postpartum endomyometritis, postsurgical gynecologic infections, septic abortion) caused by susceptible microorganisms; prophylaxis of surgical-site infection following elective colorectal surgery.

Ertapenem has in vitro activity against gram-positive and gram-negative aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.

Parenteral Community-acquired pneumonia

Adult: 1 g once daily IM or IV infusion over 30 minutes. Renal impairment: For patients undergoing haemodialysis: An additional 150 mg should be given after the session if the 500 mg dose is given in the 6-hr period before dialysis. CrCl (ml/min) Dosage Recommendation ≤30 and end-stage renal failure 500 mg daily. Parenteral Intra-abdominal infections

Renal impairment: For patients undergoing haemodialysis: An additional 150 mg should be given after the session if the 500 mg dose is given in the 6-hr period before dialysis. Indications:

Adult: IV Surgical prophylaxis 1 g as a single dose, 1 hr before start of procedure. IV/IM Susceptible infections 1 g once daily.

Intravenous Prophylaxis of susceptible infections such as intra-abdominal infections, acute gynaecological infections, urinary tract infections, skin and skin structure infections and community-acquired pneumonia

Adult: A single 1 g dose, to be given 1 hr before the start of the surgery. Renal impairment: Dose reduction may be needed. Parenteral Community-acquired pneumonia
