Hydroxyzinum - Pharmacology: May be caused by suppression of activity in subcortical areas of CNS.
Indication: Symptomatic relief of anxiety and tension associated with psychoneurosis; adjunct therapy in organic disease states with anxiety; management of pruritus caused by allergic conditions; sedative before and after general anesthesia (PO, IM).
Used for: Treating anxiety. It is also used to cause sedation before and after general anesthesia. It is also used to treat itching due to certain allergic conditions, including hives and contact dermatitis (eg, poison ivy). It also may be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Hydroxyzinum is an antihistamine. It works by affecting the brain to reduce anxiety. It also has other activities, including opening breathing tubes, relieving pain or allergy symptoms, and preventing or treating nausea and vomiting caused by motion sickness.
Hydroxyzinum, a piperazine antihistamine structurally related to buclizine, cyclizine, and meclizine, is used to treat histamine-mediated pruritus or pruritus due to allergy, nausea and vomiting, and, in combination with an opiate agonist, anxiolytic pain. Hydroxyzinum is also used as a perioperative sedative and anxiolytic and to manage acute alcohol withdrawal. Hydroxyzine\'s active metabolite, cetirizine, is also used as an H-antagonist.
Hydroxyzinum belongs to a group of medicines called antihistamines. It helps to relieve itch in allergic skin conditions, such as hives (raised red swellings) and eczema. Hydroxyzinum is also used to treat anxiety in adults and as a sedative, to help in sleep. It may also be used to control motion sickness, to relieve nausea and vomiting.
Oral Short-term management of anxiety
Adult: 50-100 mg 4 times daily. Renal impairment: Moderate-severe impairment: Reduce dose by 50%. Hepatic impairment: Reduce total daily dose by 33%. Oral Pruritus in acute and chronic urticaria and dermatosis
Adult: Initially, 25 mg at night increased if required up to 25 mg 3-4 times daily.
Child: 6 mth-6 yr: 5-15 mg daily, increased to 50 mg/day in divided doses; >6 yr: Initially, 15-25 mg/day, increased up to 50-100 mg/day. Renal impairment: Moderate-severe impairment: Reduce dose by 50%. Hepatic impairment: Reduce total daily dose by 33%. Oral Adjunct to pre- or post-operative sedation

Adult: Initially, 50-100 mg, may repeat every 4-6 hr if necessary. Renal impairment: Dose adjustment is required. Hepatic impairment: Dose adjustment is required. Incompatibility: Incompatible with aminophylline, benzylpenicillin salts, chloramphenicol sodium succinate, dimenhydrinate, liposomal doxorubicin hydrochloride, thioridazine and some soluble barbiturates.
Adult: PO Anxiety 50-100 mg 4 times/day. Pruritus Initial: 25 mg at night, up to 25 mg 3-4 times/day. Adjunct to pre- or post-op sedation 50-100 mg. IM Prompt control of anxiety or agitation Initial: 50-100 mg, may repeat 4-6 hrly if needed.
