Kåvepenin - Penicillin V is an antibiotic. It is used to treat certain bacterial infections of the ear, nose, throat, lungs, skin or bladder. It may also be used to prevent certain bacterial infections in rheumatic fever and other conditions. Penicillin V belongs to a group of antibiotics called the penicillins.

Oral Prophylaxis of recurrent rheumatic fever

Adult: 250 mg bid.

Child: <5 yr: 125 mg bid; ≥5 yr: 250 mg bid. Renal impairment: Dose adjustment may be necessary. Oral Streptococcal infections of the upper respiratory tract, including scarlet fever and erysipelas

Adult: 125-250 mg every 6-8 hr for 10 days. For streptococcal pharyngitis: 500 mg 3-4 times daily for 10 days.

Child: For streptococcal pharyngitis: 250 mg bid-tid for 10 days. Renal impairment: Dose adjustment may be necessary. Oral Pneumococcal infections of the respiratory tract, including otitis media

Adult: Mild to moderately severe: 250-500 mg every 6 hr until the patient is afebrile for at least 2 days. Renal impairment: Dose adjustment may be necessary. Oral Staphylococcal infections of the skin and soft tissue

Adult: 250-500 mg every 6-8 hr. Renal impairment: Dose adjustment may be necessary. Oral Fusospirochetosis (Vincent's infection) of the oropharynx

Indications:

Adult: PO Prophylaxis of recurrent rheumatic fever 250 mg twice daily. Streptococcal infections of the upper respiratory tract, including scarlet fever and erysipelas 125-250 mg 6-8 hrly for 10 days. Pneumococcal infections of the respiratory tract, including otitis media 250-500 mg 6 hrly until patient is afebrile for at least 2 days. Fusospirochetosis (Vincent's infection) of the oropharynx; Staphylococcal infections of the skin and soft tissue 250-500 mg 6-8 hrly.

Oral Prevention of rheumatic fever recurrence

Adult: 250 mg bid.

Child: 250 mg bid. Renal impairment: Severe: Dose adjustment may be necessary. Oral Group A β-haemolytic streptococci pharyngitis

Adult: 500 mg bid-tid for 10 days.

Child: 250 mg bid-tid for at least 10 days. Adolescents: 500 mg bid-tid for 10 days. Renal impairment: Severe: Dose adjustment may be necessary. Oral Primary prevention of rheumatic fever

Adult: 500 mg bid-tid for 10 days.

Child: 250 mg bid-tid for at least 10 days. Adolescents: 500 mg bid-tid for 10 days. Renal impairment: Severe: Dose adjustment may be necessary. Oral Group A β-haemolytic streptococcal infections e.g. mild to moderately severe upper respiratory tract infections, otitis media, erysipelas, or scarlet fever

Adult: 125-250 mg every 6-8 hr for 10 days or, alternatively, 500 mg every 12 hr for 10 days.

Child: >1 mth: 15-62.5 mg/kg daily given in 3-6 divided doses. Alternatively, 0.5-1 g/m 2 daily given in divided doses. ≥12 yr: 125-250 mg every 6-8 hr for 10 days or, alternatively, 500 mg every 12 hr for 10 days. Renal impairment: Severe: Dose adjustment may be necessary. Oral Mild to moderately severe respiratory tract infections caused by susceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae, e.g. otitis media

Adult: 250-500 mg every 6 hr until patient is afebrile for at least 2 days.

Child: >1 mth: 15-62.5 mg/kg daily given in 3-6 divided doses. Alternatively, 0.5-1 g/m 2 daily given in divided doses. ≥12 yr: 250-500 mg every 6 hr until patient is afebrile for at least 2 days. Renal impairment: Severe: Dose adjustment may be necessary. Oral Mild skin or skin structure infections caused by susceptible nonpenicillinase-producing staphylococci

Adult: 250-500 mg every 6-8 hr.

Child: >1 mth: 15-62.5 mg/kg daily given in 3-6 divided doses. Alternatively, 0.5-1 g/m 2 daily given in divided doses. ≥12 yr: 250-500 mg every 6-8 hr. Renal impairment: Severe: Dose adjustment may be necessary. Oral Mild to moderately severe necrotising ulcerative gingivitis (Vincent's infection, trench mouth, Fusobacterium gingivitis or pharyngitis, Leptotrichia buccalis infection)

Adult: 250-500 mg every 6-8 hr.

Child: >1 mth: 15-62.5 mg/kg daily given in 3-6 divided doses. Alternatively, 0.5-1 g/m 2 daily given in divided doses. ≥12 yr: 250-500 mg every 6-8 hr. Renal impairment: Severe: Dose adjustment may be necessary. Oral Mild, uncomplicated cutaneous anthrax caused by susceptible Bacillus anthracis

Adult: When IV therapy is not considered necessary: 200-500 mg orally 4 times daily. Duration: 5-10 days (naturally occurring or endemic exposure); 60 days (exposure through aerosolised inhalation of spores).

Child: <2 yr: Initial therapy should be IV rather than oral and combination therapy should be considered. ≥2 yr: When IV therapy is not considered necessary: 25-50 mg/kg daily given in 2 or 4 divided doses. Duration: 5-10 days (naturally occurring or endemic exposure); 60 days (exposure through aerosolised inhalation of spores). Renal impairment: Severe: Dose adjustment may be necessary. Oral Postexposure prophylaxis following suspected or confirmed exposure to inhalational anthrax

Adult: 7.5 mg/kg 4 times daily. Recommended duration: 60 days.

Child: <9 yr: 50 mg/kg daily in 4 divided doses; ≥9 yr: 7.5 mg/kg 4 times daily. Recommended duration: 60 days. Renal impairment: Severe: Dose adjustment may be necessary. Oral Prevention of pneumococcal infections in children with spleen disorders

Child: <5 yr: 125 mg bid; ≥5 yr: 250 mg bid. Renal impairment: Severe: Dose adjustment may be necessary.
