Osmofundin - Osmofundin is a diuretic.
Osmofundin is used to force urine production in people with acute (sudden) kidney failure. Increased urine production helps prevent the kidneys from shutting down, and also speeds up elimination of certain toxic substances in the body.
Osmofundin is also used to reduce swelling and pressure inside the eye or around the brain.

Chemically, Osmofundin is an alcohol and a sugar, or a polyol; it is similar to xylitol or sorbitol. However, Osmofundin has a tendency to lose a hydrogen ion in aqueous solutions, which causes the solution to become acidic. For this reason, it is not uncommon to add a substance to adjust its pH, such as sodium bicarbonate. Osmofundin is commonly used to increase urine production (diuretic). It is also used to treat or prevent medical conditions that are caused by an increase in body fluids/water (e.g., cerebral edema, glaucoma, kidney failure). Osmofundin is frequently given along with other diuretics (e.g., furosemide, chlorothiazide) and/or IV fluid replacement.
Intravenous Oliguric phase of renal failure
Adult: 50-100 g in a 24-hr period by IV infusion of a 5-25% solution. Adjust rate of administration to maintain a urine flow of at least 30-50 mL/hr.
Child: 0.25-2 g/kg. Intravenous Cerebral oedema
Adult: 0.25-2 g/kg by IV infusion of a 15-25% solution given over 30-60 minutes. Intravenous Reduction of raised intracranial pressure
Adult: 0.25-2 g/kg by IV infusion of a 15-25% solution given over 30-60 minutes. Intravenous Reduction of raised intraocular pressure
Adult: 0.25-2 g/kg by IV infusion of a 15-25% solution given over 30-60 minutes. Intravenous Renal function testing
Adult: 0.2 g/kg infused over 3-5 min. Irrigation Transurethral prostatic resection
Adult: Use 2.5-5% solution for bladder irrigation.
Adult: IV Renal function test 0.2 g/kg over 3-5 mins. Oliguric phase of renal failure 50-100 g in a 24-hr period via infusion; adjust rate to maintain a urine flow of ≥30-50 mL/hr. Raised intracranial pressure; Raised intraocular pressure; Cerebral oedema 0.25-2 g/kg over 30-60 mins. Transurethral prostatic resection Use 2.5-5% soln for bladder irrigation
