Pravastatin-Teva - Pravastatin-Teva is in a group of drugs called HMG CoA reductase inhibitors, or "statins." Pravastatin-Teva reduces levels of "bad" cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL) and triglycerides in the blood, while increasing levels of "good" cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein, or HDL).
Pravastatin-Teva is used to lower cholesterol and triglycerides (types of fat) in the blood.
Pravastatin-Teva is also used to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack, and other heart complications in people with diabetes, coronary heart disease, or other risk factors
Pravastatin-Teva is used in adults and children who are at least 8 years old.
Pravastatin-Teva may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
The primary cause of cardiovascular (CV) disease is atherosclerotic plaque formation and sustained elevation of cholesterol in the blood increases the risk of CV disease. Pravastatin-Teva lowers hepatic production of cholesterol by competitively inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme that catalyzes the rate-limiting step in the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway via the mevalonic acid pathway. Decreased hepatic cholesterol levels causes increased uptake of low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and reduces cholesterol levels in the circulation. Pravastatin-Teva also inhibits hepatic synthesis if VLDL. At therapeutic doses, Pravastatin-Teva lowers LDL cholesterol by 20-30%, increase high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol by 3-10%, and decrease plasma triglycerides by 19-34%. HDL cholesterol is thought to confer protective effects against CV disease, whereas high LDL and triglyceride levels are associated with higher risk of disease.
Pravastatin-Teva helps lower your cholesterol level. Excessive cholesterol in your body can clog up your blood vessels. This can lead to many health problems such as strokes and heart disease, including heart attacks. Pravastatin-Teva is meant to be taken as part of a complete cholesterol management programme that should include exercise, a healthy diet and lifestyle.
