REVATIO - Used for: Treating high blood pressure in the lungs (pulmonary arterial hypertension [PAH]). It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
REVATIO is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. It works by relaxing and dilating the blood vessels in the lungs. This lowers the blood pressure in the lungs and helps to improve your ability to exercise.
REVATIO relaxes muscles and increases blood flow to particular areas of the body.
REVATIO under the name Viagra is used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men. Another brand of REVATIO is Revatio, which is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension and improve exercise capacity in men and women.
Do not take Viagra while also taking Revatio, unless your doctor tells you to.
REVATIO may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
REVATIO is a medication for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. This drug restores impaired erectile function and provides a natural response to sexual stimulation. REVATIO is a potent and selective inhibitor of cGMP-specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) which is responsible for the breakdown of cGMP in the cavernous body. This medicine has no direct relaxing effect on corpus cavernosum, but enhances the relaxing effect of active nitric oxide in this tissue. When sexually aroused the local release of NO under the influence of REVATIO leads to the inhibition of PDE-5 and increase of cGMP in the cavernous body, resulting in relaxation of smooth muscles and increasing blood flow to the cavernous body. REVATIO may cause mild and transient violation of distinguishing colors (blue / green). Alleged violations of the mechanism of color vision is PDE6 oppression, which is involved in the transmission of light in the retina.
REVATIO is used to treat male erectile dysfunction (impotence) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Part of the physiological process of erection involves the release of nitric oxide (NO) in the corpus cavernosum. This then activates the enzyme guanylate cyclase which results in increased levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), leading to smooth muscle relaxation in the corpus cavernosum, resulting in increased inflow of blood and an erection. REVATIO is a potent and selective inhibitor of cGMP specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) which is responsible for degradation of cGMP in the corpus cavernosum. This means that, with REVATIO on board, normal sexual stimulation leads to increased levels of cGMP in the corpus cavernosum which leads to better erections. Without sexual stimulation and no activation of the NO/cGMP system, REVATIO should not cause an erection.
