Ronaxan - Pharmacology: Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis.

Indication: Treatment of infections caused by susceptible strains of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (eg, Rickettsia, Mycoplasma pneumoniae ); treatment of trachoma and susceptible infections when penicillins are contraindicated; treatment of acute intestinal amebiasis; uncomplicated gonorrhea in adults; prophylaxis of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum ; anthrax (including inhalational anthrax); severe acne; treatment of only inflammatory lesions of rosacea ( Oracea only).

It active against aerobic gram-positive bacteria: Staphylococcus spp. (including strains producing penicillinase), Streptococcus spp. (including Streptococcus pneumoniae), Bacillus anthracis, Listeria monocytogenes; anaerobic bacteria: Clostridium spp.

Ronaxan is also active against aerobic gram-negative bacteria: Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Escherichia coli, Shigella spp., Salmonella spp., Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella spp., Bordetella pertussis, as well as against Rickettsia spp., Treponema spp., Mycoplasma spp. and Chlamydia spp.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus spp., Serratia spp., most strains of Bacteroides fragilis are resistant to doxycycline.

Ronaxan, a long-acting tetracycline derived from oxytetracycline, is used to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis and treat non-gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis, exacerbations of bronchitis in patients with COPD, and adult periodontitis.

Ronaxan is an antibiotic of the tetracycline group. The drug exerts broad-spectrum bacteriostatic effects. The preparations mechanism of action consists in inhibition of certain protein production in bacterial cells through binding to the 30S ribosome subunit. Due to insufficiency of needed proteins the bacterial cell is unable to multiply. The preparation affects gram-positive an negative bacteria.

    Adult: 100 mg bid for 7 days or a single dose of 300 mg followed by another dose repeated 1 hr later. Oral syphilis

    Adult: 200 or 400 mg daily in divided doses for 10-15 days. Oral Relapsing fever and louse-borne typhus

    Adult: 100 or 200 mg as a single dose. Oral Prophylaxis of scrub typhus

    Adult: 200 mg as a single dose. Oral Acne

    Adult: 50 mg daily for 6-12 wk. Intravenous Susceptible infections
