Indications: active immunisation

It is a vaccine, which is a typeof medicine that helps to protect(immunise) people from certaininfectious diseases. It does this bypreparing the body’s defences to fightthe infection, before you catch thebacteria or virus. It is usually recommended foruse in babies and young childrenfrom 6 weeks to 9 years of age. Prevenar is a mixture of the outersugar coating (polysaccharide) from7 different strains or serotypes ofbacteria called Streptococcuspneumoniae. Each serotype is joinedto a non-toxic protein to make itwork more effectively in babies andyoung children. Prevenar is not recommended for use in adults or inchildren older than 9 years of age. Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteriaare one of the causes of* meningitis (a serious braininfection that could cause deathor brain damage)* bacteraemia (infection of theblood)* pneumonia* otitis media (an ear infection thatcan cause pain and temporaryhearing loss and may requireyour child to have an earoperation).Prevenar can protect against 7 of thestrains of Streptococcus pneumoniaethat can cause these diseases. Prevenar does not replace the needfor vaccination with Haemophilusinfluenzae type b (Hib), a vaccinethat protects against anotherimportant cause of meningitis. Your child cannot catch any of theabove diseases from the vaccineitself, because it is not made with liveor whole bacteria. The chance of asevere reaction from Prevenar is verysmall and the risks from not beingvaccinated with Prevenar can be veryserious. As with all vaccines, 100%protection against the above diseasescannot be guaranteed.
