Unasyn uses and description

Sort by popularity
Unasyn - Used for: Treating infections caused by certain bacteria.

Unasyn is a penicillin antibiotic. It works by blocking the bacteria's cell wall growth, which kills the bacteria.

Unasyn and sulbactam are antibiotics in the penicillin group of drugs. They fight bacteria in your body.

The combination of Unasyn and sulbactam is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria.

Unasyn and sulbactam may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Unasyn contains the combination of Unasyn and Sulbactam. Unasyn is a broad spectrum penicillin antibiotic. Unasyn inhibits the activity of the enzyme called transpeptidase that is essential for the bacteria to make proteins of the cell wall. As a result the cell wall becomes instable and bacteria die. Sulbactam sodium does not possesses antibacterial activity, however, irreversably inhibits beta-lactamase. In such a way Sulbactam sodium protects Unasyn from hydrolysis and inactivation.

Indications:

  • Pneumonia
  • Bronchitis
  • Otitis
  • Sinusitis
  • Pyogenic infection
  • Peritonitis
  • Infections of the genitals
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Gonorrhea

  • Infections caused by susceptible Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, E. coli, Klebsiella, Serratia, Citrobacter, indole-negative Proteus, Haemophilus influenzae, anaerobes including Bacteroides, Fusobacterium, Clostridium difficile, Branhamella catarrhalis, Enterobacter sp, Neisseria meningitidis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

Infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. Typical indications are upper respiratory tract infections including sinusitis, otitis media and tonsillitis ; lower respiratory tract infections including bacterial pneumonias and bronchitis; urinary tract infections and pyelonephritis ; skin and soft tissue infections and gonococcal infections. Sultamicillin may also be indicated in patients requiring sulbactam/ampicillin therapy following initial treatment with Unasyn IM/IV.

For infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. Oral: Typical indications are upper respiratory tract infections including sinusitis ; tonsillitis ; otitis media ; lower respiratory tract infections including bacterial pneumonias and bronchitis; urinary tract infections and pyelonephritis ; skin and soft tissue infections and gonococcal infections. Sultamicillin may also be indicated in patients requiring sulbactam/ampicillin therapy following initial treatment with Unasyn IM/IV. IM/IV: Typical indications are upper and lower respiratory tract infections including sinusitis, otitis media and epiglottitis ; bacterial pneumonias; urinary tract infections and pyelonephritis; intra-abdominal infections including peritonitis, cholecystitis, endometritis and pelvic cellulitis ; bacterial septicaemia ; meningitis; skin, soft tissue, bone and joint infections and gonococcal infections. Unasyn IM/IV may also be administered perioperatively to reduce the incidence of postoperative wound infections in patients undergoing abdominal or pelvic surgery, in which peritoneal contamination may be present. In termination of pregnancy or caesarean section, Unasyn IM/IV may be used prophylactically to reduce postoperative sepsis.

Upper & lower resp tract infections, UTI & pyelonephritis; skin & soft tissue & gonococcal infections. Vial Intra-abdominal infections, bacterial septicemia & meningitis. Post-op wound infections, post-op sepsis.

Unasyn is indicated for the treatment of infections due to susceptible strains of the designatedmicroorganisms in the conditions listed below. Skin and Skin Structure Infections caused by beta-lactamase producing strains ofStaphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp. (including K. pneumoniae), Proteusmirabilis, Bacteroides fragilis, Enterobacter spp., and Acinetobacter calcoaceticus. Intra-Abdominal Infections caused by beta-lactamase producing strains of Escherichia coli,Klebsiella spp. (including K. pneumoniae), Bacteroides spp. (including B. fragilis), andEnterobacter spp. Gynecological Infections caused by beta-lactamase producing strains of Escherichia coli, andBacteroides spp. (including B. fragilis). Efficacy for this organism in this organ system was studied in fewer than 10 infections. While Unasyn is indicated only for the conditions listed above, infections caused byampicillin-susceptible organisms are also amenable to treatment with Unasyn due to itsampicillin content. Therefore, mixed infections caused by ampicillin-susceptible organisms andbeta-lactamase producing organisms susceptible to Unasyn should not require the addition ofanother antibiotic. Appropriate culture and susceptibility tests should be performed before treatment in order toisolate and identify the organisms causing infection and to determine their susceptibility toUNASYN.Therapy may be instituted prior to obtaining the results from bacteriological and susceptibilitystudies, when there is reason to believe the infection may involve any of the beta-lactamaseproducing organisms listed above in the indicated organ systems. Once the results are known, therapy should be adjusted if appropriate. To reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain effectiveness of UNASYNand other antibacterial drugs, Unasyn should be used only to treat or prevent infections that areproven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. When culture andsusceptibility information are available, they should be considered in selecting or modifyingantibacterial therapy. In the absence of such data, local epidemiology and susceptibility patternsmay contribute to the empiric selection of therapy.
